NEWTON CHAMBERS CAR CARRIER BR LINED MAROON E96297E
These Car Carriers were designed to transport up to 6 cars (two in the hydraulically operated central well and four cars on the upper deck). These units were used between London, York and Edinburgh from the early 1960's and were commonly used in sets of five or six along with a few Mk1 coaches fronted by either ex-LNER 'Pacific's' or the following diesel locomotives.

In the late 1960's these carriers were painted in BR Blue/Grey and were used all over the country including the West of England fronted by Class 52 'Westerns'. Although used on various railays, these units spent most of their career running on the East Coast Mainline.
