Capetown/Carlisle class light cruiser, laid down October 18 1917, launched July 9th 1918, commissioned August 21 1919. Placed in the Reserve Fleet in 1927. Converted to an anti-aircraft cruiser and served in WWII during the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. On June 25th 1940, in rough conditions off the Gironde estuary southwestern France, CALCUTTA collided at speed with HMCS FRASER which subsequently sank (Canada's first naval loss of WWII). 66 souls were lost.
