About the Class 33
The British Rail Class 33, commonly known as the Crompton, was introduced in 1960 for passenger and freight duties on the Southern Region.
Built by Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company and powered by Sulzer diesel engines, the class became a familiar sight across southern England.
The Class 33/0 was the standard variant, with locomotives serving for decades on both passenger and freight workings.
