Description
William Stroudley designed the D1 0-4-2T to handle the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway's fast-growing London suburban traffic, which the famous 'Terriers' could no longer cope with. 125 were built between 1873 and 1887, most at Brighton Works and 35 by Neilson & Co. Known to crews as the 'D-Tank', the class combined good acceleration, economy and smooth running, and could be put to almost any job.
The Southern Railway inherited 111 at the Grouping and fitted many with push-pull equipment, spreading them across its whole network. Twenty reached BR ownership, but all had gone by the early 1950s. The last survivor worked on Lancashire County Council's Whittingham Hospital Railway until 1956. None were preserved.
Rapido Trains UK's OO gauge D1 is built in diecast metal and plastic with metal running boards, and has lots of separately fitted, era-specific details. Boilers, smokeboxes, chimneys, domes, safety valves, whistles, brake blocks, Westinghouse pumps and push-pull gear all change to suit each version. It has all-wheel pickups, a MoPower stay-alive, sprung buffers, front and rear NEM 362 coupler pockets and a factory-fitted speaker.
