Description
Thomas Hill of Rotherham serviced Sentinel road and rail vehicles and became Sentinel's agent. When Rolls-Royce took over the Sentinel works in 1956, Thomas Hill helped develop the new Sentinel diesel shunters and became their sole distributor. Its new Kilnhurst Works opened in late 1959, and some of its first orders were to rebuild Sentinel steam locomotives as diesel-hydraulics.
The steam loco's chassis, wheels and final drive were kept. A Rolls-Royce six- or eight-cylinder diesel, torque converter and gearbox went in, with a new body, cab, buffer beams and buffers. Drivers got easier controls and better visibility, and recessed steps and side skirts were added for shunters' safety. The first, No. 101c, left the works in January 1960. Four were converted that year and seven more in 1961, with works numbers carrying a 'c' (conversion) suffix. They worked across a wide range of UK industries, and preserved examples run at the Foxfield and Chasewater railways.
Rapido Trains UK's first OO gauge diesel is built in diecast metal and plastic. It has a smooth, powerful mechanism, chassis-mounted sanding gear, an etched detail pack and front and rear NEM 362 coupler pockets.
