EFE Rail Class 314
at Patterton

If you’re a modeller with a keen eye and a love for Scottish EMUs—or just a fan of well-designed third-rail/overhead-electric multiple units—you’re in for a treat. The newly-announced models from EFE Rail of the British Rail Class 314 are poised to become a must-have. And when it comes to securing your pre-order Rainbow Railways in Scotland are here to help. Pre-order here

Why the Class 314 is special

  • Prototype heritage
The Class 314 units were built by British Rail Engineering Limited (BREL) at their York Works in 1979, as a three-car AC-overhead design, following on from the dual-voltage Class 313 family.
They served the Glasgow area – notably the Argyle Line and other North Clyde routes – until their withdrawal in December 2019.
  • Modelling significance
The new tooling by EFE is the first time the PEP-family EMUs (classes 313 / 314) have been made ready-to-run in OO gauge.
It boasts numerous details: precision-moulded bodyshells, separate detailing parts, complex underframe pipework, a diecast metal chassis in the centre car, coreless motors, a pantograph that can be raised manually (for the Class 314), a Plux22 DCC socket and pre-fitted speaker, and directional lighting, interior illumination and more.
  • Available liveries
For the Class 314 specifically, we’re looking at liveries like:
  • Delivery timeline
The expected delivery is Q1–Q2 2026. So pre-ordering now helps lock in your spot.

Why pre-order with Rainbow Railways

Here are the reasons why Rainbow Railways makes a compelling choice for securing your model:

  • Stock and listing: On their website you’ll find the Class 314 models already listed with pre-order status, e.g., E81011 (314201) and others marked “Available to Pre-Order”.
  • Good reputation: Customer reviews highlight knowledgeable staff, fast dispatch and good service. One recent set of reviews on their site say: “Great model rail shop… very well priced, quick to dispatch… would not hesitate to recommend.”
  • Scottish base: Being based in Linlithgow (West Lothian), Scotland, they are well-positioned for Scottish-railway modelling enthusiasts.
  • Competitive pricing: The models are listed at £349.95 RRP, but Rainbow lists them at £297.50 for pre-order. (Model E81011 listed at £297.50)

How to make the most of your pre-order

  • Act early: Because of tooling and the desirability of these units (especially the Scottish liveries) quantities may be limited once release happens.
  • Choose your livery: Decide whether you want the Carmine & Cream, Orange & Black, Blue & Grey or Saltire version—and confirm stock count with the retailer.
  • Payment and deposit: Make sure you understand the deposit or payment terms of the pre-order (Rainbow’s website shows full price listed, but check if deposit only).
  • Consider DCC-ready: These models come with Plux22 socket and pre-fitted speaker; if you plan to fit sound or DCC, ensure you’re ready for that.
  • Timing: Be aware that delivery is not immediate: expected 2026. Keep the pre-order confirmation and note potential for shifts.
  • Local pickup vs shipping: If you’re in Scotland (or nearby), consider click & collect if offered by Rainbow—saves shipping, gives you direct contact.
  • Layout planning: If you’re modelling a Scottish or West-of-Scotland layout, you might want to plan your route, electrification (overhead only for 314) and scenery accordingly.

In summary

If you’re looking for a high-quality, well-detailed OO-gauge model of the Class 314 EMU – the first of its kind – the EFE Rail release is a standout. And when it comes to getting ahead of the pack, Rainbow Railways provides a strong option: good pricing, clear pre-order process, Scottish-market relevance and positive service feedback.

Rainbow Railways is on my list for the shop that has the items I can’t get down south . So I do browse every now and again . Staff have been very helpful in the past with an order where I had to swap out a container for a similar one . That’s good service as I was notified back then before sending , this allowed me to pick one I recall - simple and job done for the container order . Now today fits the bill for finding the popular wagon , plus a couple more , had one in stock which sold out in my local region . I’ve also found on this site others in the past at great deals too . Can’t complain excellent service.

Very well priced, quick to dispatch and that's backed up by knowledgeable and service-focused people. When I had a small problem with one of my models (not their fault, rare manufacturer issue) they went above and beyond to get it sorted. Definitely one of the local model railway shops we should be supporting, both in person and online. Recommended without hesitation.
